The Promise of Persistent Prayer

· Jerwin Arnado

Preached at the Victorias worship service, May 24, 2025.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” — Matthew 7:7–8

Introduction

Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, gives us a divine assurance — God is not distant or disinterested. He invites us into a relationship marked by communication and trust. In these two verses, Jesus reveals a powerful truth about the nature of God and how we should approach Him.

1. Three Actions: Ask, Seek, Knock

  • Ask — This speaks of prayer. It’s the simplest form of communication with God. Just open your heart. You don’t need eloquent words — just honesty.
  • Seek — This goes deeper. It’s about pursuing God’s will, wisdom, and direction. It implies effort and intention.
  • Knock — This shows persistence. Even when doors seem closed, we are called to continue knocking in faith, trusting God to open the right ones.

Application: Don’t give up after one prayer. Keep asking. Keep seeking. Keep knocking.

2. God’s Response: He Hears and He Acts

Verse 8 assures us that everyone who asks receives, everyone who seeks finds, and to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. This is not a maybe — it’s a promise.

  • God is not ignoring you.
  • He may not answer how or when you expect, but He will answer according to His perfect will.
  • He responds not just to words, but to faith.

Every asker, seeker, knocker — not just the “qualified.” God answers faith, not formality.

3. The Heart of God: A Willing Father

These verses reveal the character of God — a loving Father who delights in giving good things to His children (see verse 11). He’s not annoyed by your persistence; He welcomes it.

Imagine a child asking their parent for help. A good parent doesn’t ignore them — they listen, respond, and help when needed. If human parents know how to give good gifts, how much more our Heavenly Father?

Conclusion

What are you asking for today? What are you seeking? What doors are you knocking on?

Don’t stop. Keep praying. Keep pursuing God. He sees your faith. He hears your cry. He opens doors that no man can shut.

Call to Action

Come to God today with a heart full of trust. Bring your requests, your needs, and even your silence — He is listening. And His promise is sure: “Ask, and it shall be given you…”
