The Resurrection: Cornerstone of Our Faith

Preached at the Victorias worship service, Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of our Christian faith.

1 Corinto 15:17 — Kag kon si Cristo wala nabanhaw, ang inyo pagtuo wala sing pulos kag wala pa kamo napatawad sa inyo mga sala.

This event, which occurred almost two thousand years ago, is among the best attested facts in human history and experience. The resurrection of Christ was predicted in the Old Testament and by Christ Himself.

Job 19:25–27 — “Pero nahibaluan ko nga buhi ang akon manug-apin, kag sa ulihi magaabot siya sa duta sa pag-apin sa akon. Kon madunot na ang akon panit kag maghalin na ako sa akon lawas, makita ko ang Dios. Makita ko siya mismo sang akon mga mata, kag indi na siya mangin iban sa akon. Dako gid ang akon handom nga makita siya.”

Many Infallible Proofs

During the forty days following His resurrection, Jesus showed Himself to be alive from the dead by “many infallible proofs.”

Binuhatan 1:3 — Sa tapos siya napatay kag nabanhaw, makapila siya nagpakita sa nagkalain-lain nga paagi sa iya mga apostoles sa pagpamatuod nga nabanhaw siya. Sa sulod sang 40 ka adlaw nagpakita siya sa ila kag gintudluan niya sila parte sa paghari sang Dios.

He appeared at various times and places to many people, who told others what they had seen (Luke 24:33–43; John 20:24–29; 1 Corinthians 15:3–8).

Cleansed Past, Present Help

Christ’s resurrection has been at the heart of the church’s message from the Day of Pentecost to the present. By rising from the dead, Jesus Christ demonstrated that He had cleansed the guilt of our past and is able to help us in our present lives.

Roma 4:24–25 — Pakamatarungon man kita kon nagatuo kita sa nagbanhaw kay Jesus nga aton Ginoo. Ginpatay si Jesus tungod sa aton mga sala, kag ginbanhaw siya agod pakamatarungon kita.

Hebreo 7:25 — Gani sarang niya maluwas sing bug-os ang bisan sin-o nga tawo nga magpalapit sa Dios paagi sa iya. Kay buhi siya sa wala sing katapusan sa pagpakitluoy sa Dios para sa ila.

A Secure Future

His resurrection assures us that our future is safe and secure.

Juan 14:19 — “Kag tungod kay ako nagakabuhi, kamo magakabuhi man.”

Tungod kay si Jesus may kabuhi nga wala sing katapusan, kita may kabuhi man nga wala sing katapusan. Without Christ’s resurrection we would have no salvation from sin, and no hope for our own future resurrection.

Proof of His Deity

The empty tomb is proof of Christ’s deity.

Juan 5:26 — Tungod nga ang Amay may gahom sa paghatag sang kabuhi, ako nga iya Anak makahatag man sang sina nga kabuhi.

Roma 1:4 — …sa iya espiritu nga balaan, napamatud-an nga siya Anak sang Dios sa makagagahom nga paagi sang nabanhaw siya halin sa kamatayon.

Spiritual Power Today

The resurrection of Christ also provides believers with spiritual power today.

Roma 6:3–4 — …agod subong nga si Cristo ginbanhaw sang makagagahom nga Amay, kita magakabuhi man sang bag-o nga kabuhi.

Efeso 1:19–20 — Ginapangamuyo ko man nga mahibaluan ninyo ang gahom sang Dios nga indi matupungan nga para sa aton nga nagatuo sa iya. Ini nga gahom amo man ang iya gin-gamit sa pagbanhaw kag pagpapungko kay Cristo sa iya tuo didto sa langit.

A Coming Judgment

The bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ is evidence that God will one day judge the world in righteousness.

Binuhatan 17:31 — Kay may adlaw nga ginpili ang Dios nga hukman niya sing matarong ang tanan nga tawo diri sa kalibutan paagi sa tawo nga iya ginpili. Ginpamatud-an niya ini sa tanan paagi sa iya pagbanhaw sang amo nga tawo.

He is risen. Our faith is not in vain, our sins are forgiven, our future is secure — and the same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in everyone who believes.
