Faith requires movement before the miracle happens. In Joshua 3:14–16, God did not part the Jordan River while the Israelites were safely resting in their tents. He waited until the priests took a step of obedience and physically dipped their feet into the rushing, overflowing waters.
The Scripture
“Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing.” — Joshua 3:15–16 (NIV)
The Devotional Reflection
1. The Obstacle is Real
The Israelites stood before a river at “flood stage.” This was not a calm, shallow stream. It was a raging, dangerous torrent overflowing its banks. Sometimes, God calls you to a new season, but the obstacle standing in your path looks completely insurmountable.
2. Presence Over Circumstances
The priests were not walking alone; they carried the Ark of the Covenant, which represented the literal presence of God. When you face overwhelming seasons, your security does not come from a clear path. It comes from the truth that God is walking with you into the storm.
3. The Mandate to Move First
Human logic says, “God, clear the path, and then I will move.” God’s principle of faith says, “Move, and then I will clear the path.” The miracle was released because of their movement, not before it.
True trust means being willing to get your feet wet in the unknown.
Daily Application
- Identify your “Jordan”: What is the major obstacle or decision that is making you hesitate right now?
- Take one micro-step: Stop waiting for a perfect guarantee. Write the email, make the call, or have the tough conversation. Trust God to meet your movement with His power.
A Closing Prayer
Dear Lord, give me the courage of the priests at the Jordan. When life feels overwhelming and the path forward looks dangerous, help me trust Your presence more than my fears. Give me the faith to take that very first step into the water, knowing You are already upstream handling the rest. Amen.
